New Mexico Terms

Adobe:
Popular Spanish word for mud brick. Adobe is made from
mud and straw and sun dried for hardness.

Alamogordo:
Meaning - Fat Cottonwood.

Arroyo:
Term used to describe a ditch, canal or gully which
carries water generally from rains.

Nicho:
"Niche" or ledge cut into the wall. Nichos are often
used to display art and pottery.

Kiva Fireplace:

A rounded fireplace most often placed in a corner.
Usually with a stucco or plaster exterior.
  Most are functional for wood burning.

Saltillo Tile
:
A soft ceramic tile which is made in Mexico.
It is a flooring used in many New Mexico homes.

Southwestern Style:
Homes with a stucco or adobe exterior and having
flat style roofs. Some may have wood trim over windows
and doors.   Exterior viga ends may be visible near
the roof line or decorative ends may be places in
the adobe or stucco to simulate vigas.

Snow Homes:
Homes which are "Southwester Style" and built
by a contractor named Snow.

Viga:
A beam used as roof supports or as a decorative
ceiling beam used in the interior of a home. Trees
similar in circumference of a telephone pole are used.
