- Just
12 Miles to the North finds the Village of Tularosa
. It houses one of the oldest Catholic Churches in our
area,
- Saint Frances de Paula. It is truly southwestern style
- and still conducts masses.
This small village has a unique
water system for it's original
49 blocks. It is an aqueduct system know
as "ditch water".
- On a scheduled basis, gates are opened and water
flows
through the "ditch" to properties. Each property
has a
gate which is opened for a specific time then closed
to let the next property receive their
water. It makes
for large trees and wonderful lawns.
On Christmas Eve Tularosa is a spectacular sight.
The main road and surrounding streets are lines
with
luminaries. These are small brown
bags filled with sand
and a
candle. They are then lit and provide a beautiful
glow. It is a wonderful holiday tradition.
- Cloudcroft is another short drive from Alamogordo.
Just 20 minutes to the East you will find this resort
village. This trip takes you up the
mountain road
with a 4500 feet change in elevation. It is a
beautiful drive, going from
desert landscape to
mountain pines. Along the way
you will find
High Rolls, a smaller village know for it's orchards.
A little father up you will see to your
right the
remains of a railroad trestle. This
is part of the
original track coming to
Alamogordo. There is a
spot to stop and enjoy the view.

In Cloudcroft you will find little shops filled with
fun
southwestern flavor arts, clothing and even a
photography shop
to have your picture taken in
all types of western
garb from bar maids to
Billy the Kid! There is also the historic Lodge with
unique rooms, wonderful dining and one of the
highest altitude
golf courses. Don't forget to look
for Rebecca while you
are there, she is the most
sought after
spirit at the Lodge.
